  • Taxonomy

    Scientific Name

    Liocheles waigiensis (formerly Hormurus waigiensis)

    Family:

    Hormuridae

    Common Names:

    Rainforest scorpion

  • Physical Description

    Size:

Relatively small; adults typically measure 2–5 cm in length.

    Coloration:

Brownish to dark brown, blending well with its environment.

    Body Structure:

The body is flattened, which helps the scorpion squeeze into tight crevices.

Pincers (pedipalps) are large and strong relative to their size, but the tail (metasoma) is short and thin compared to many other scorpions.

  • Habitat

Found in tropical and subtropical regions, including parts of:

    Southeast Asia

    Papua New Guinea

    Australia

    Pacific islands

Prefers humid environments such as rainforests and coastal woodlands.

Lives under rocks, bark, and in leaf litter, often hiding in crevices or small spaces.

  • Venom

Liocheles waigiensis has mild venom that is not considered medically significant to humans.

Its primary defense mechanism is its pincers rather than its sting.

  • Confusion

Often confused with it's relative Liocheles australasiae, but there are some key differences:

    Liochcles australasiae

    • Liochcles australasiae is a small scorpion, typically measuring between 2 to 3 cm in length.
    • It has a lightbrown to reddish-brown coloration, which helps it blend into it's natural habitat.
    • The pincers are shorter and more robust compared to Liocheles waigiensis.

    Liochcles waigiensis

    • Liochcles waigiensis is slightly larger, ranging from 3 to 5 cm in length.
    • It exhibits a darker coloration, often appearing dark brown or nearly black.
    • The pincers are longer and slimmer, giving it a more elongated appearance.
